Course Description

The course aims to introduce students of Theatre Studies to the French language and to support their continuous familiarization with it. It also presents and analyses key aspects of the broader French theatrical culture, as well as essential elements of French theatre terminology and theatrical discourse as expressed in works by French playwrights and Francophone theatre theorists. The course further seeks to develop students’ understanding of basic linguistic structures for everyday communication in contemporary France, alongside their ability to recognize and use elementary theatre-related terminology in French. It also promotes familiarity with French theatrical culture and contemporary artistic practices, while fostering an openness to intercultural and multicultural perspectives in relation to the arts.

After the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • understand, describe, reproduce, analyse, and compose simple spoken and written French structures related to everyday situations in contemporary France;
  • recognize, interpret, and reproduce basic French theatre terminology as used in dramatic texts and theoretical works;
  • identify and present key elements of French theatrical culture and contemporary artistic production;
  • analyse dramaturgical texts through comparison, inference, and critical evaluation;
  • develop a foundational understanding of French language structures relevant to theatre studies;
  • engage more deeply with French theatrical culture and contemporary artistic life in France;
  • cultivate an intercultural and multicultural awareness that connects students with contemporary artistic and aesthetic developments.
